Aloe is one of the few herbs almost everyone has already met. In Ayurveda the inner gel is called kumari, "the young girl", for its traditional association with women's vitality.
It is classed as cooling and moistening, which is why it turns up in formulas for heat and dryness, and applied to skin after sun or friction.
